Technical Aspects Of IPTV Technology

IPTV is a new and innovative way to stream television content. It stands for internet protocol television. It basically allows the user to experience the television content over the internet protocol networks, through which the television data is streamed and provided to the user. Iptv subscription enables the user to watch the television programmes that he or she is interested in and also record the ongoing television programme to watch it later.

Protocols used for IPTV

IPTV provides the facility of both multicast and unicast thus enabling both live streaming and video on demand (VOD) respectively. In order to setup an IPTV, one requires broadband connection which is connected to the internet protocol network and further linked to devices like computer, smartphone, television, gaming console, set top box or touch screen tablet. Video and audio compression also takes place by H.264 or H.263 and MDCT codec. The some of the primary protocols used in iptv are:-

1.       IGMP

It is the protocol which is used to multicast for live television content streaming. Under it many other protocols also work which are RTP (Real time transport protocol), UDP (User datagram protocol), and TCP, (Transmission control protocol).

2.       VOD streaming

The protocol used in VOD streaming is RTP over the UDP and TCP protocols.

3.       Gaming consoles and other devices like set top box

In this the streaming is done over UPnP AV for the unicast through HTTP over TCP and in the case of multicast it is RTP over UDP.
Therefore, with help of these protocols the IPTV streaming takes place efficiently and hence,hd iptv server works accordingly in a proper manner.
